Self-consumption in municipal buildings with photovoltaic pergolas in public spaces

(December 14, 2020) Renewable generation in cities has not just reached cruising speed. In 2019, just over 3,000 photovoltaic MW were installed in Spain. Self-consumption represented 15% of all this installed capacity (about 459 MW, UNEF data), but of all of it less than 50 MW were in the field of domestic self-consumption. In all likelihood, moreover, most installations were carried out in metropolitan and peri-urban areas, where single-family homes are more present. There is still a long way to go to deploy self-consumption, given the possibilities opened up by the royal decree on self-consumption of April 2019. We have started by analyzing the electricity consumption curves of some 150 municipal buildings in the 19 districts of the city of Valencia. These buildings represent between 70 and 80% of the total electricity consumption of the Valencia City Council buildings. With the help of the previously developed photovoltaic generation simulator with shadows, we are estimating the generation potential on the photovoltaic roof of representative municipal buildings. We have also begun to identify possible sites for photovoltaic pergolas in public spaces on the map.
